Mexican law requires you to have a valid Mexican Auto Insurance policy when driving in Mexico. Fortunately, you can buy short term insurance cheaply and with no trouble at all. You might find that the most convenient way to purchase car insurance is to use one of the vendors on the Internet: just buy online and print out your insurance policy. I use Oscar Padilla Insurance whenever I travel to Ensenada or anywhere in Mexico. It's inexpensive and I like the convenience of purchasing online.
There may be one advantage to buying insurance online in that the Mexican insurance company will have your policy at internet speed. If the policy is drawn up by hand by a person in an office, then mailed to the insurance company in Mexico, days could pass before the insurance company can confirm that you are insured.
Please remember that Mexico's laws are different than those of the United States. If you get into an accident without insurance, the authorities could hold you and/or impound your vehicle until you can prove that you can pay for the damage you are deemed to have caused. Although being involved in a traffic accident is no longer a felony like it once was, you could potentially find yourself in a Mexican Jail which may turn out to be as romantic as it sounds.
